Frank Lampard has been sacked as Chelsea head coach, with former PSG boss Thomas Tuchel expected to take over.

The 42-year-old leaves Stamford Bridge with the club sitting ninth in the Premier League table, 11 points behind leaders Manchester United.

The club announced the decision despite Chelsea beating Luton Town 3-1 in the fourth round of the FA Cup at the weekend.

According to Sky sources, former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel is set to take over at Stamford Bridge.

The 47-year-old German coach left PSG at the end of December with the best win percentage in Ligue 1 history of more than 75%.

He steered his side to two league titles and a domestic quadruple and also reached the final of the Champions League.

Announcing the “very difficult” decision to part company with Lampard, Chelsea released a statement to say the move had been made after “lengthy deliberation and consideration”.

The club added: “We are grateful to Frank for what he has achieved in his time as head coach of the club.

“However, recent results and performances have not met the club’s expectations, leaving the club mid-table without any clear path to sustained improvement.”

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich said: “This was a very difficult decision for the club, not least because I have an excellent personal relationship with Frank and I have the utmost respect for him.

“However, under current circumstances we believe it is best to change managers.”

Lampard took over at Stamford Bridge in July 2019, leaving his position as manager of Championship side Derby County.

Chelsea’s record goalscorer signed a three-year deal and despite a transfer ban, led them to the FA Cup final and a fourth-place finish in his first managerial campaign at Stamford Bridge.

With cash to spend ahead of this season, the arrivals of Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner have failed to translate into improved results.

Despite a 17-game unbeaten run earlier in the campaign, Chelsea have suffered a string of disappointing results since the middle of December.
