Israel’s opposition parties are moving closer to reaching an agreement that could mean the end of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s 12 years in power.
Naftali Bennett, leader of the small Yamina party and a kingmaker following elections held in March, said he would join a diverse collection of opponents to form a unity government and topple Mr Netanyahu.
Mr Bennett, a self-made millionaire, is a former Netanyahu aide turned rival. The 49-year-old could be the country’s next prime minister.
“The party unanimously supports Bennett and his efforts to establish a government and to prevent a fifth election,” Yamina said in a statement.
Israel has held four elections over the past two years, with each ending in deadlock.
The votes were widely seen as a referendum on Mr Netanyahu, who is on trial for corruption.
If his opponents fail to form a government, new elections could be triggered.
