Baby girl killed by family pet named by police – as they confirm breed of dog

Police have named and released a picture of the seven-month-old baby killed by a pet dog in Coventry.

Elle Doherty suffered serious injuries to her head after being bitten by the family’s dog inside their home, West Midlands Police have said.

Officers and ambulance workers arrived at the Shorncliffe Road address “within minutes” of being called just after 3pm on Sunday, they added.

Elle received treatment at the scene before being rushed to hospital.

She died a short time later.

The dog was registered as a Belgian Malinois, a type of Belgian Shepherd which is not classed as a dangerous breed.

It was removed from the home on Sunday and humanely destroyed.

Officers have concluded there have been no criminal offences and a file is now being prepared for the Coroner.

The police statement said: “Our thoughts remain with the family at this tragic time, and they have now asked to be left to grieve in private.”
