There have now been 73,000 deaths involving COVID-19 in the UK, while the number of cases has reached 1,605,172.

New data on Friday revealed that the R number has fallen to between 0.9 and 1 across the country. R represents the average number of people each COVID positive person goes on to infect.

The government’s new Tier 3 and Tier 2 interventions, which are due to come into effect on 2 December, should keep the R number below 1 in the run up to Christmas, according to a government adviser.

People have been protesting against the lockdown measures in central London today, with police arresting 60 demonstrators.

More from Covid-19

Hundreds of demonstrators marched through the capital near Oxford Street chanting “freedom”, with some carrying placards reading “stop controlling us” and “no more lockdowns”.

On Saturday, the British government announced it had appointed a vaccines minister to take charge of the coronavirus vaccine rollout, as his government seeks to quell a backbench rebellion over the new tier system.

Nadhim Zahawi – who is among Tory MPs critical of the new restrictions – has been made a health minister responsible for the deployment of the jabs, Downing Street said.
